Meet Tim Lutz, Red Lake Schools Superintendent

Superintendent Tim Lutz

Tim Lutz has held a number of educational roles during his career.  Tim started his educational career as a high school English/Language Arts teacher.  After a number of years in the classroom, he was hired as a school counselor and worked as both a high school and elementary counselor for four years while also working as a school district technology coordinator.  Eventually, Mr. Lutz returned to school to earn his principal’s licensure and served as a principal for four years.

In 2008, Mr. Lutz was hired as the superintendent of Kelliher School district where he stayed for ten years.  In 2018, Mr. Lutz was hired as the superintendent of Bemidji Area Schools.  After four years in Bemidji, he announced his plan to retire in 2022.  Prior to his retirement, he became aware of the opening of the superintendent position in Red Lake and is now pleased to be serving as Red Lake School District’s superintendent.

Tim’s wife Karyn is a registered dietitian and works as a food and nutrition consultant in a number of area schools, as well as long-term care facilities, including the Jourdain Perpich Extended Care Center in Red Lake.

Tim and Karyn have two adult children, Jordan who works as a Sustainability Project Manager at Bemidji State University and Katey who is currently the manager of Cantabria Coffee in Bemidji.  The Lutzes have one grandson who turned 1 in March, and they enjoy spending time with him whenever possible.

Mr. Lutz has a number of hobbies that usually involve being outside.  They include bicycling, hunting, fishing, skiing, snowshoeing, and spending as much time as possible on the lake.  He also enjoys reading, especially when he can’t be outside.

Mr. Lutz greatly enjoyed his years in Kelliher and Bemidji Area Schools and now looks forward to a productive and successful school year in Red Lake Schools. He finds that his greatest enjoyment comes from visiting schools and classrooms and getting to know staff and students and building positive relationships with everyone.
